I was wondering what the forum people thought of recent movies and books they have read. Or what is your favorite Movie or book?
I read The Kite Runner recently, I walked away from that book feeling a little disturbed. One of the few movies I have watched recently that I was really blown away by was Avatar, even though I saw it in Mt. Vernon and not in 3d.
My favorite all time movie is Good Will Hunting.

| There is a second book in that Kite Runner series. As well as a movie of Kite Runner. Kite Runner is interesting, confusing, but a good literary work. BUT I didn;t really realize it until I recently watched the movie. Check it out. |

I am not sure I am ready for a second installment of that story. I was a little taken off guard by his honesty of his faults. It certainly didnt make me like the main character. I am not sure he ever really changed for the better, just tried to deal with the consequences of his actions. But, it definitely opened my eyes to what it must be like to live under the Taliban.
I have moved on to a slightly lighter book for now, Genuine Lies, but my next book is going to be The Virgin's Knot.

| I really liked She's Come Undone, I Know This Much is True, and The Hour I First Believed, all by Wally Lamb. I also enjoyed Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Hosseini. |

Seriously NRM?
I've been looking at it with interest but the man prefers more action-y things. We'll probably wait for DVD and I'll have to spring it on him when he's not expecting it.
I think it's gone from the theaters, but "Book of Eli" was awesome.

BTW Angie - I LOVE to talk about books! Thanks for this thread.
Obviously not "new" but I've been reading Anne Rice over the last several months. Far and away "Feast of All Saints" is my favorite, probably because of historical aspects of NOLA.
I've been working on the Vampire Chronicles and recently read "The Witching Hour" to start the Mayfair Witches series. Rice has an interesting style that can be very hard to read.
I'd like to know if anyone has read "Memnoch the Devil" (my most recent Rice novel) and what you thought of it. "Memnoch" was published in 1995 but there is such a strong social commentary buried in the story that is still current.

Thanks for the info NRM. I have been dissapointed by so many movies in the past ten years that I hesitate to go unless I know it is worth the money. I had a friend on facebook say Alice in Wonderland was bad, has anyone else seen it?

Angie, She's Come Undone is the story of a young woman, Delores (I think) who survives all sorts of family difficulties such as insanity, rape, and obesity, but ultimately manages to emerge as a strong, self-assured woman. She also has a great sense of humor!
I Know This Much is True is a multi-generational novel about a young man who has a schizophrenic brother whom he both deeply loves and resents. I actually read it several years ago, but I remember I could not put it down.
Wally Lamb's most recent book, The Hour I First Believed is about the Columbine massacre, told from the perspective of a teacher and his wife who were directly involved. It is a work of fiction, but there are many factual events, diary entries, etc. included. Very interesting! |

I'm in the long process of reading Glenn Beck's Common Sense. Pretty good so far.

I have actually read I Know This Much Is True. Years Ago. I was also moved by this book. I have a horrible memory when it comes to specifics but when you mentioned the brothers and one being schizophrenic I remembered the book. She's Come Undone sounds similar to what I have heard of the story of Precious. I will definitely look into those books if I run out of books to read from my free pile from my mom. She reads about 5 times faster than me so she just gives me piles of books she is done with occasionally.
